The first step I usually take when I need information is dependent on my surroundings. If I am at work I will generally ask one of my coworkers if available, as they have years of experience and knowledge. I also sometimes ask physicians, nurses or other members of the healthcare team if I think they will have the answers of if the question is related to their scope. I also use the intranet within Health PEI to look up medical/health related questions. This is a great tool to use while at work.
If I am at home looking for information I will likely start with a google search and go from there. When using google it is important to look for credible sources, journal articles and search engines. To determine how good the information is that I find it generally comes down to if the source is creditable. Usually I will search the source of the information and see what comes up. Generally when the information is backed up by meta analysis and clinical trials it is quality information. When I find good information I usually bookmark it or save it in my google docs for easy access. If it pertains to work I will save the article to my desktop for easy access. Tools I generally use are PubMed search engine and up to date to find information.
